The Icelandic horse is usually between 12hh and 14.2hh (122cm -147cm) although they can be bigger – even up to 15hh. However they should not be written off as “just a child’s pony”. They are very strong and stocky and bred to carry adult riders.
The breed can be described as gentle but spirited with the majority having excellent manners on the ground, whilst being a forward and powerful ride.
A combination of the harsh winter conditions in Iceland and the lack of natural predators has developed a horse that has learned to stand still in difficult situations and is bold and curious.
‘Don’t call me a Pony’ will show you just how awesome Icelandic horses can be….
